DNA self-assembly and DNA nanotechnology
Abstract:
Bottom-up self-assembly of DNA nanostructures have been proposed for variety of biotech uses ranging from information storage, to targeted drug delivery or scaffolding for new materials. Engineering predefined building blocks at nano level with various chiralities that assemble in large 3D crystallographic structures is an essential step for both 3D algorithmic assemblies as well as for spatial information storage. We will discuss some recent developments in the field and will focus on spatial systems as models for information processing at molecular level. The rationally-designed 3D DNA motif, the tensegrity triangle, is the first DNA molecule used to provide DNA crystallographic assemblies. The possibilities of these building blocks give ever-increasing geometric complexities that form vast arrays of three-dimensional structures. We show a model that explains and predicts which tensegrity triangle structures can form and which chiral topology they can form, left- or right-handed. The theoretical model is also experimentally verified through units designed with incremental rotational steps.

"The Value(s) of AI: Economic anthropology in the making of the Future"
What is the value of AI systems? This lecture uses a critical co-design approach to describe the complex values associated to AI systems designed to support pilots (Digital Flight Assistants).
While airlines saw DFAs as ways to cut costs, Pilots who participated in our research saw the digital flight assistants as teammates who would be generally untrustworthy, but, under the right circumstances, very helpful. This evaluation relied upon comparing the DFA with human co-pilots alongside three specific kinds of labour experiences where AI would fail to help them cope with increasingly degraded working environments. Yet, this mistrust was also couched in a layer of optimism. Paradoxically, in a future that they saw as necessarily getting rid of (most of) the humans in the cockpit, DFAs were imagined as possible conversational partners, reminiscent of the golden age of aviation. Taken together, these two aspects suggest the need for an approach to the evaluation of AI that combines structural and emergent factors.

In the scope of the Horizon Europe INDUSAC project students of all programmes are invited to join 3- and 6-member international teams and solve the company's challenges, while they also:
- gain experience in working with companies,
- create an international network,
- receive up to 1000 EUR gross per student.
Currently, more than 70 different challenges from Slovenian and European companies are published on the platform INDUSAC and they cover different topics from the fields of economy, ICT and natural sciences.
Further steps:
- Students or Researchers select a challenge,
- Students or Researchers register on the platform (the registration form is different),
- within a specific challenge join the Slack community, where they first select the channel with the name of the specific challenge and then can connect with other students. The team can be formed also outside Slack.
- Once an international team is formed (3 different countries, 60% from widening and associated countries), the team (at least one female or male student) prepare a joint Motivation letter (short CV) and submit it to the company through the platform by 11 February 2024.
- If the Motivation letter is approved by the company, students may begin solving the challenge presumably at the beginning of March 2024.
Detailed information with terms and conditions for participating can be found on the project website and in the Call for students, in case of any questions they can contact INDUSAC team at indusac@ijs.si.
The first deadline is 11 February 2024, when the international team should submit only a joint Motivation letter (short CV).
The British Embassy in Skopje invites female students in North Macedonia aged 18 to 22 to enter a competition to be an Ambassador for a Day.
Ambassador Matthew Lawson announced the competition on the Embassy social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter.
This competition will give the winner the unique opportunity to shadow the British Ambassador to North Macedonia in the week of International Women’s Day and learn about the work of an Ambassador and other diplomacy leaders.
Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and therefore also half of its potential. Today there are too few women in international diplomacy, including women from under-represented backgrounds, whether ethnic, religious, economic, cultural, or personal identity, among others. To end this underrepresentation, we must ensure equality of opportunity and equitable outcomes for everyone. This is why we are encouraging women to make their voices heard on topics that affect us all.
We encourage young students to become leaders and advocates for change by offering them the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the British Embassy in Skopje on 6 March 2024.
We will be celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) together and this competition should highlight women’s roles.
To enter, interested applicants must write an essay in English answering the following question in no more than 500 words: “Which influential British woman would you like to meet and why?” and send to BritishEmbassySkopje@fcdo.gov.uk until 28 February 2024.
More information on the Ambassador for a Day competition and how to enter can be found here.
Looking forward to receiving many entries and inspiring female students to be an Ambassador for a Day at the British Embassy Skopje.
